SPORTS MASSAGE TRAINING

There are a huge number of training establishments nationwide that offer courses for would be sports massage practitioners. The courses vary in length, content and cost, and it is often unclear exactly what qualifications may be achieved.

The Sports Massage Association (SMA) was launched in 2002 as the professional body for sports massage within the UK. The association enjoys the support of such organisations as the English Institute of Sport, Sport Scotland and the Sports Council for Wales. In addition, a number of the major sports governing bodies in the UK have recognised the need for such an organisation as the SMA. The SMA has 'approved' a number of sports massage courses as meeting a set of core standards and requirements. Graduates from 'approved' courses may apply to become members of the SMA and thus become eligible for the benefits a professional body is able to offer.

For more information on SMA 'approved' courses in Wales visit Sports Performance Services.

For information on other 'approved' courses visit the Sports Massage Association.
